Carley Rickles’ body of work exhibited in The Creatives Project’s Annual Fellow Exhibition, PRESENCE, summarizes her field observations of the 2020 landscape: a year limited by place and led by questions. The “fields” she observed refer to her documented experiences of a modified year in a car, in protest, in quarantine, in parks, in residual spaces, on trails, in studio, in rapidly changing neighborhoods, in Covid-safe social interactions, in Zoom hospital rooms, and in Covid-19 test sites. Rickles juxtaposes drawings, illustrative ceramics, model-esque sculptures, cheaply printed photographs, found objects, and written notes, evoking a chaotic symmetry between the content of the objects. The works patch together a visual representation of processing the 2020 landscape in which the subject is clear, but understanding it as a whole is not.
